India Begins Efforts to Join France's Sixth-Generation Fighter Jet Development Programme

India's Ministry of Defence has initiated efforts to join the French-led Future Combat Air System (FCAS), a sixth-generation fighter aircraft programme, according to the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Defence (18th Lok Sabha) report on Demands for Grants 2026-27, presented in Parliament on 7 August 2026.

Entering the 6th-Gen Era: The Global Consortia & India's Strategy

The committee's report points to two major consortia currently developing sixth-generation fighter jets globally, one bringing together the UK, Italy and Japan under the GCAP initiative, and the other formed by France and Germany through FCAS. Amid this race, India's Defence Ministry has told the panel it has taken concrete steps to join the French-led FCAS effort,  so the country does not fall behind in next-generation air combat technology. In response, the committee has asked for a detailed status report along with a clear roadmap and timeline for how India plans to acquire such aircraft.

Indigenous Airpower Backbone: AMCA & LCA Mk-II Updates

1. Alongside international collaboration, the panel highlighted the need to keep pushing domestic fighter jet development. 
2. The design for the Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) has already been finalised, with discussions on production now underway; the committee has sought updated timelines on this front. 
3. It also noted progress on the Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Mk-II, which is currently in its design and development stage, alongside continued work on the Multi Role Fighter Aircraft (MRFA) procurement process, together forming the backbone of India's self-reliance push in fighter jet manufacturing.

Budgetary Shift: Funding the High-Tech Sky

Data shared with the committee shows the Indian Air Force's share within the Defence Services Estimates (DSE) climbing from 8.83% in 2021-22 to 10.80% in 2026-27. Despite this rise, the panel felt the allocation should grow further, citing the current geopolitical situation and the steep costs tied to acquiring advanced aircraft and near-space capabilities.

Paradigm Shift in Modern Warfare & Multi-Domain Modernization

1. The committee described a broader shift in how wars are fought today, with air power and near-space operations becoming increasingly central — a trend it said India must be financially and technically prepared for. 
2. It also acknowledged the Army's role during Operation Sindoor and called for maintaining a strong capital budget to preserve regional deterrence. 
3. On the naval side, the report referenced ongoing modernisation efforts, including the induction of 26 Rafale-M aircraft, MH-60R helicopter support, and heavyweight torpedoes, backed by significant budgetary allocations for both existing commitments and new schemes.
