Micheál Martin became Ireland’s Prime Minister for the second time

Micheal Martin became the (taoiseach) Prime Minister of the Republic of Ireland for the second time on 23rd January 2025. He was previously the Prime Minister of Ireland from 2020 to 2022.
The member of the lower house of Ireland's Parliament, Dail voted 95 to 76 in support of the Fianna Fail political party leader Micheal Martin.
Government has been formed in Ireland almost after two months of general election in the country which failed to give decisive mandate to any political party or coalitions.
Ireland is a parliamentary democracy where the executive power is vested in the cabinet led by the Prime Minister. The Prime Minister is responsible to the lower house of the Parliament and shall have a majority in the house.
The Parliament of Ireland is known as Oireachtas and it is bicameral. The upper house of the Parliament is called Éireann (Senate) and the lower house is called Dail.
The 174 members of the Dail are directly elected by the people for a term of five years.
The election to constitute the 34th Dáil was held on 29 November 2024 with the voter turnout being 59.7%, the lowest in more than a century.
The Fianna Fáil party of Micheál Martin won 48 seats while his coalition partner Fine Gael secured 38 seats.
The coalition secured 86 seats while the majority needed to form the government was 88.
After the election it took almost two months for the formation of the government.
In 2020 the Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil political parties entered into a coalition government where the leaders of both the parties will alternate as the Prime Minister and deputy Prime Minister of Ireland for half of the term of the Parliament.
In 2020 Micheál Martin became the Prime Minister and Leo Varadkar of the Fine Gael party became the deputy Prime Minister.
In 2022 Leo Varadkar, who is of Indian origin became the Prime Minister but he resigned in 2024 after which Simon Haris of the Fine Gael became the Prime Minister in the 33rd Dáil.Simon Harris is the youngest Prime Minister of Ireland
In the current government Micheal Martin is the Prime Minister and Simon Harris is the deputy Prime Minister. Simon Harris is expected to replace Micheál Martin as the Prime Minister of Ireland in 2027.
