The Indore Mayor in council has approved a proposal to use the name 'Bharat' instead of 'India' in all its official functions and correspondence. The proposal, approved by the Indore Mayor Pushyamitra Bhargava, will now be placed before the 85-member house of the Indore Municipal Corporation.
According to Mayor Bhargava, the Indian name was a gift from the British. The name Bharat reflects our country's rich historical and cultural heritage.
Controversy erupted in the country after the Official G20 Summit invitation issued by the government of India mentioned the 'President of Bharat' instead of the normally used 'President of India.'
India successfully hosted the 18th G20 Heads of State and Government Summit on 9-10th September 2023 in New Delhi.
Some opposition parties saw it as a move by the government to change the name of the country to Bharat.
Article 1 of the constitution officially declares the country's name as India that is Bharat.
Indore is the most populous and the largest city of Madhya Pradesh.
It is also the commercial capital of Madhya Pradesh.
The city is situated on the Malwa plateau. It lies on the banks of two small rivulets – the Saraswati and the Khan.
The city draws its name from the 18th-century temple of Sangamnath or Indreshwar situated in the city.
It is the only city in India with the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) and Indian Institute of Technology (IIT).
The city of Indore has been consistently ranked as the cleanest city in India for the past 6 years by the Swachh Bharat Survekshan. The annual Swachh Bharat Survekshan is conducted by the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs.
In 2021, Indore was declared the first Water Plus city in the country by the government of India. A Water Plus city certificate is provided to a city for maintaining cleanliness in rivers and drains under its administration.
