To control the rise in rice prices, the Government of India will sell rice at Rs 25 per kg under the "Bharat Brand".

  • According to the data of the Consumer Ministry, the inflation of rice has increased by 14.1 percent this year compared to last year and its average price has reached Rs 43.3 per kg.
  • It will be sold through the National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India (Nafed), National Cooperative Consumers Federation (NCCF) and Kendriya Bhandar outlets.

What is the government selling under the Bharat brand?

  • Presently, the Central Government is selling flour and gram pulses at cheaper rates under the Bharat brand.
  • On 6 November 2023, the Central Government launched 'Bharat Atta' at a price of Rs 27.50 per kg. 
  • It is being made available in packs of 10 Kg and 30 Kg.
  • Whereas one kg pack of gram pulses with Bharat brand is being sold at the rate of Rs 60 per kg and 30 kg pack of the same is being sold at the rate of Rs 55 per kg.
  • 2,000 retail points have been created across the country to sell these products.

National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India (NAFED):

  • National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India is an organisation of marketing cooperative societies for agricultural produce.
  • It was established on 2 October 1958 under the Multi-State Cooperative Societies Act.
  • It is the central nodal agency for the Price Support Scheme (PSS) for the purchase of oilseeds and pulses at minimum prices.
  • NAFED is headquartered in New Delhi.
  • Its regional offices are in Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai and Kolkata.
  • It also operates 28 regional offices in state capitals and other important cities.

National Cooperative Consumers Federation (NCCF):

  • It was established on 16 October 1965 to function as the apex body of consumer cooperative societies in the country.
  • It was registered under the Multi-State Cooperative Societies Act of 2002.
  • NCCF functions under the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution of the Government of India.
