Geetika Kaul Becomes The First Woman Medical Officer Posted In Siachen

Captain Geetika Kaul of the Indian Army's Snow Leopard Brigade has become the first woman medical officer to be deployed at Siachen, the world's highest battlefield.

Geetika Kaul has achieved this significant achievement after successfully completing the rigorous induction training at Siachen Battle School.
Induction training covers various aspects like high altitude adaptation, survival techniques and special medical procedures important for operating in harsh conditions.

Establishment of Base Transceiver Station in Siachen:

In October 2022, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) set up a new Base Transceiver Station at Siachen Glacier to provide a mobile network to troops deployed at altitudes above 15,500 feet.

Siachen Glacier:

The Siachen Glacier is located in the Eastern Karakoram Range in the Himalayas, northeast of Point NJ9842, where the Line of Control between India and Pakistan ends.
The entire Siachen Glacier came under the administrative control of India in the year 1984 (Operation Meghdoot).
Siachen Glacier is located from north-west to south-east. It originates at Indira Col West at an altitude of 6,115 metres, reaching a col (lowest point) at Indira Ridge at an altitude of 3,570 metres.
It is the largest of the five major glaciers of the Karakoram and the second-largest glacier in the world outside the polar regions (after Fedchenko Glacier in Tajikistan).
The Siachen Glacier is located south of the drainage divide area that separates the Eurasian Plate from the Indian subcontinent in the vast glaciated portion of the Karakoram, sometimes referred to as the 'Third Pole'.
The area is home to rare species, including snow leopard, brown bear and ibex, which are at risk due to the military presence in the area.
Nubra River originates from Siachen Glacier.
Siachen Glacier is the highest battlefield in the world.
