Manohar Joshi, former Chief Minister of Maharashtra and former Speaker of the Lok Sabha, died on 23 February 2024. 86-year-old Mr Joshi breathed his last at around 3 am on February 23 at a hospital in Mumbai. Mr Joshi was admitted to the hospital after cardiac arrest. Joshi's last rites will be performed at Dadar cremation ground.

Prime Minister Modi expressed grief:

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed condolences on the demise of former Maharashtra Chief Minister Manohar Joshi. Manohar Joshi was also the Speaker of the Lok Sabha from 2002 to 2004.

Joshi has relations with Shiv Sena:

  • Manohar Joshi was very close to Shiv Sena founder Bal Thackeray.
  • Manohar Joshi was a veteran leader of Shiv Sena during his time. Mr Joshi was admitted to the same hospital in May last year after suffering a brain haemorrhage.

Manohar Joshi's political journey:

  • Manohar Joshi served as Maharashtra's Chief Minister from 1995 to 1999. Manohar Joshi was the first leader from the undivided Shiv Sena to hold the top post in the state.
  • Manohar Joshi, also an MP, served as the Lok Sabha Speaker from 2002 to 2004 during Vajpayee's tenure.

Manohar Joshi's journey from teacher to CM:

  • Manohar Joshi was a teacher in his early life. Joshi was associated with RSS in his early life. Then after the establishment of Shiv Sena in 1966, he joined it. Joshi rose from CM to Lok Sabha Speaker from this party.
  • Joshi was also the Mayor of Mumbai from 1976 to 1977.
  • Later again in the year 1995, when a coalition government of Shiv Sena and BJP was formed in Maharashtra, he was made the CM. Joshi became CM for 4 years till 1999.
  • Manohar Joshi was the most trusted leader of Balasaheb Thackeray. Balasaheb Thackeray had said that he would not become CM. So, he made his closest friend Manohar Joshi the CM of Maharashtra.

Mumbai players played wearing black bands:

  • Manohar Joshi additionally held the position of President at the Mumbai Cricket Association. In the Ranji Trophy match on 23 February 2024, Mumbai players demonstrated by wearing black armbands as a tribute to Manohar Joshi. During this time the match of Mumbai vs Baroda is being played.
