Bhutan Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay is visiting India on a five-day visit from March 14 to 18, 2024. India's Foreign Secretary Vinay Mohan Kwatra paid an official visit to Thimphu, Bhutan from 29 to 31 January 2024.

  • On one hand, while the dialogue is increasing on the ongoing border dispute between Bhutan and China, on the other hand, continuous discussions are taking place between India and Bhutan.

The government approved three proposals for cooperation with Bhutan:

  • Just before the Bhutan PM to India, the Union Cabinet meeting on March 13, 2024 has approved three proposals to provide cooperation to Bhutan.
  • In this, there is an agreement between the two countries regarding energy conservation and increasing energy efficiency.
  • The second agreement is regarding supply of petroleum products to Bhutan.
  • The third agreement with Bhutan pertains to food safety products.

PM Tobgay will have high level talks with PM Modi:

  • This visit of PM Tobgay will give both the countries an opportunity to review their historical relations and decide the activities for the coming years. During this, Tobgay will hold top-level talks with PM Modi.
  • Tobgay will also have separate talks with Foreign Minister S Jaishankar.
  • Along with Tobgay, a high-level team is also coming to India which will include Bhutan's Foreign Minister, Commerce Minister and Energy Minister.
  • PM Tobgay will also meet President Draupadi Murmu separately.
  • Elections were held in Bhutan in January 2024 in which the Tobgay party returned to power. After that Indian Foreign Secretary Kwatra visited Bhutan.

Border dispute agreement with Bhutan-China:

  • In the last term, the Tobgay government has signed an agreement with China to resolve the border dispute. Five months ago, Bhutan's Foreign Minister Tandi Dorjee met China's Foreign Minister Wang Yi. In a statement issued after the meeting of the two ministers, Bhutan had said that it wants to quickly resolve its border dispute with China.
