Union Home Minister and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah released the book 'Assam's Braveheart Lachit Barphukan' on 20 January 2024. The book was released at the Srimanta Sankardev International Auditorium in Guwahati in the presence of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

  • The book 'Assam's Braveheart Lachit Barphukan' has been published in English language by the state government. It has been translated into 24 scheduled Indian languages.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah's program in Assam:

  • Union Minister Shah participated in the 60th Raising Day of Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) at Salonibari in Sonitpur district. Participated in the passing out parade of 2551 Assam Police Commando at Sarusajai Stadium, Guwahati.

About Lachit Barphukan:

  • He was born on November 24, 1622. Lachit Barphukan effectively led his army in the battle of Saraighat in 1671. Due to this, the Mughal army's attempt to capture Assam failed.
  • Lachit Barphukan inspired the strengthening of Indian naval power, revival of inland water transport and creation of infrastructure related to naval strategy.
  • Presently ‘Lachit Barphukan Gold Medal’ is awarded to the best cadet of the National Defence Academy.
  • The Lachit Barphukan Medal was instituted in the year 1999.
  • Lachit Barphukan died on April 25, 1672.

About Battle of Saraighat:

  • The Battle of Saraighat was fought in the year 1671 on the banks of the Brahmaputra River in Guwahati. The Battle of Saraighat is known as the largest naval battle on a river. In the battle of Saraighat, the Mughal army was defeated and the Ahom army won.

About Ahom Kingdom:

  • Founder: Chaolung Sukapha
  • The Ahom Empire ruled Assam from the 13th century for the next six centuries.
  • The Ahom rulers had control over this land until the Treaty of Yandaboo in 1826.
